The Curse of Expertise: Exploring the Problem of Anticipating Readers’ Needs

This article explores the problems faced by professional writers in attempting to anticipate the needs of their readers. On the basis of two studies (a study of the literature on expert/novice communication and an exploratory study requiring experts to assess and explain the likelihood and severity of various problems for readers), the authors distinguish cognitive shortcuts that may hinder experts in their attempts to focus on readers’ needs.
